Munich: Day 1

After an excursion day to Bamberg, it was time to start exploring the city. It was a drizzly and cool day with grey skies....perfect weather for brewery-hopping.
A cheery fruit stand at the Marienplatz. This is the view you have as you come out of the underground train station at the city center stop.
The New City Hall with its Glockenspiel. At 11 and noon the bells play a charmingly off-tune song while painted figures dance in circles around an unmoving and watchful king and queen.
This is probably the most famous beer hall in Munich, the Hofbrauhaus. We found a well-worn table in the huge hall and sampled a brew or two while the oompah band played.
Vaulted and painted ceilings of the Hofbrauhaus.
Uh huh. Mader Brew Street. That's my street.
Turns out there are a few Maders in the Chronicles of the Brewer Family of Mader Brew.
What was once Maderbrau is now Schnieder Weiss. This place had a greater tap selection than other brew houses, including a refreshing aroma-hopped "white" beer.
Local men escape the grey outside.
A view of the brewery hall.
A place we would spend a lot of time in is the Viktualenmarket. Just around the corner from the main square, this permanent outdoor market was a feast for the senses.
A row of butcheries lined one side of the market. Since we rented a studio that had a kitchenette, we were able to sample a few varieties of Germany's famous sausages.
And oh, the cheese shops....
Goat or sheep....goat or sheep....

One corner of the many-steepled Munich skyline.
Since Spring was around the corner (prowling like a lion, perhaps?) there were flower stalls dotting city corners, making me happy just at the sight of them.
